How Much Does It Cost to Hire Movers in Denver? What Affects the Price
Moving quotes in Denver vary widely. Here are the factors that actually move the number up or down, and how to compare estimates fairly.
If you have called around for moving quotes in Denver, you have probably noticed the numbers are all over the place. That is not because companies are guessing. Moving is priced from a handful of concrete variables, and once you know them you can read any estimate and understand exactly what you are paying for.
The variables that drive your price
How much you are moving. Volume and weight are the foundation of every estimate. A studio apartment and a four-bedroom house are different jobs, and the number of boxes matters as much as the furniture.
Crew size and hours. Most local moves are priced by the hour with a crew of two or three movers plus a truck. A bigger crew costs more per hour but often finishes in far less time, so the total can land lower.
Access at both ends. This is the factor people underestimate most. Stairs, long carries from the door to the truck, elevator reservations, tight alley parking in older Denver neighborhoods, and HOA loading rules all add time.
Distance. A move across Denver is billed differently than a move to Colorado Springs or out of state. Long-distance pricing typically factors weight and mileage rather than hours.
Packing. Full packing, partial packing (kitchens and closets are the usual candidates), or supplies only. Packing materials and labor are separate line items on most estimates.
Specialty items. Pianos, safes, gun safes, large glass, treadmills, and oversized art take extra equipment and care.
Timing. Demand peaks in summer, at month-end, and on weekends. A midweek move in the middle of the month is usually the calmer, cheaper slot.
How to compare two quotes fairly
Line items, not totals. Ask every company the same three questions:
- Is this hourly or a flat rate, and when does the clock start and stop?
- What is included — blankets, wrap, dollies, disassembly and reassembly, tape?
- What would trigger an additional charge on move day?
A quote that looks low but starts the clock at your door while another starts at the warehouse is not actually cheaper. Get the estimate in a form you can read line by line.
Ways to bring the number down
- Purge before you pack. You pay to move every box, including the ones you never open.
- Pack the non-fragile items yourself and let the crew handle kitchens, glass, and electronics.
- Have everything boxed, taped, and labeled before the crew arrives — an hourly crew waiting on packing is the most expensive kind of packing.
- Reserve the elevator and the loading zone in advance.
- Move midweek and mid-month when you can.
The bottom line
Costs typically vary with size, access, distance, packing, and timing, so any honest company will want details before giving you a number. If someone quotes you over the phone in ten seconds without asking about stairs or square footage, treat that number as a guess.
